WAD: Iceland onboard – from requirements to reality

Welcome to a full day hybrid event celebrating the implementation of the Web Accessibility Directive (WAD) in Icelandic law! You will be inspired and learn from accessibility specialists, policy makers, end users with disabilities and regulators.

The program is divided in three parts: the morning contains plenary presentations and panel discussions focusing on WAD implementation. After lunch you will meet end users with disabilities showing how they use digital services. The final part of the program offers role-based interactive training sessions in breakouts.

13.00-14.30 GMT Meet the users – the lived experience of accessibility
In this interactive part of the event, which is only available onsite in Reykjavik, users with a wide variety of disabilities show how they use digital services with their respective assistive technology. At each station, you will learn about the lived experiences from a specific user perspective in a hands-on demo, accompanied by an accessibility specialist who can answer any technical questions. A perfect way to deepen your understanding of how the legal and technical requirements and support actual user needs. In-depth understanding and fascination guaranteed!

15.00-16.30 GMT Role-based training – how to meet the legal requirements hands-on
Now you know what the users need, but how do you make it happen in your everyday work? During the practical training sessions, accessibility specialists will walk through how to interpret and test the most important accessibility requirements for the whole value chain: procurers/decision makers, designers, developers and content creators. The training sessions will be hands-on with exercises and time for questions and discussions. You will deepen your understanding and feel sure about how to prioritise moving forward.

16.30-17.00 GMT Next steps for Iceland
Legislation is only a tool. To achieve real change, there is work to be done at several levels. As we wrap up the day, we also plan for the future – what more is needed for the Web Accessibility Directive to be successful in Iceland? Panel discussion with stakeholders from various sectors.

This is a hybrid event. It is taking place in amazing and accessible Harpa event and concert hall, in the harbour of Reykjavik and online.

Price:

The first part of the event (09:00-12:00 GMT) is free of charge and open to all.

The interactive parts with exhibition and role-based trainings are free of charge for IAAP members. Non-members pay €70 (10.000 ISK) plus VAT.

The Meet the user-exhibition is not transmitted online.

The interactive training sessions are possible to follow online, but please note that the exercises are created for onsite participation.

28 October Oslo, Norway

IAAP Nordic is contributing to the Universal design network for IT (UnIKT in Norwegian) event in Oslo, Norway. The event will be held in Norwegian. Detailed program to be released.

The network is coordinated by the Norwegian Directorate for Children, Youth and Family Affairs (Bufdir). It aims to strengthen efforts to promote digital participation and help ensure that more digital initiatives benefit a wider audience. UnIKT also aims to encourage high-quality, inclusive digital projects aimed at the general public.

IAAP Nordic is organising an interactive workshop at the Saavuta event in Helsinki, Finland. The event will be held in Finnish and English. The over-arching theme of this year’s conference is process.
