IAAP Nordic hybrid event in Helsinki, Finland
3-4 February 2025
The event is hosted by Tietoevry
Day 1
3 February
Member only onsite only workshop 13.00-17.00 EET
followed by social and networking.
Background and content
The half-day workshop is part of a series of events initiated at the IAAP EU Paris event in 2024.
European accessibility legislation points to the EN301549 for technical specifications of compliance. Already in the current version, 60 of these requirements are not found in WCAG, which means there is no “how to meet”/understanding/examples of techniques or similar documentation attached to the EN. With the European Accessibility Act, the requirements are expected to increase – making the gap even wider.
Lack of prescriptive testing procedures leaves room for flexibility and innovation, but also requires organisations in scope as well as monitoring agencies and surveillance authorities to have both knowledge and experience of testing requirements that may be “new” to them. Automatic testing tools are far from covering these requirements and accessibility experts are still discussing the details. Developers, designers and content producers – as well as monitoring/surveillance authorities – need a common understanding of the requirements and how to test them.
During this workshop, led by subject matter experts from across the EU, IAAP members, surveillance/monitoring agencies and end users with disabilities will work together on handling, interpretation, testing and alignment of the EN requirements beyond WCAG. The results of the workshop feed directly into the ongoing work of updating the EN-standard and will be publicly available at no cost – open to all.
The workshop is onsite only, open to IAAP members or by invitation only.

EN301549 requirements that go beyond WCAG
IAAP Nordic webinar 26 November 2024
Recording of the webinar with Wilco Fiers, Malin Hammarberg, Peter Kemeny and Susanna Laurin.
Public sector bodies in scope of the Web Accessibility Directive must meet the minimum accessibility requirements of EN301549 Annex A. 30+ of these requirements go beyond WCAG, and are deemed difficult to interpret, as there is no “how to meet”, or “understanding” documentation.
This is why IAAP EU together with leading experts and monitoring agencies, has initiated a series of workshops where we work together and discuss how to adopt, interpret, test and align these requirements across sectors and member states.
During this webinar, you will learn about the results so far, and how you can contribute!
Speakers: Wilco Fiers, Malin Hammarberg, Peter Kemeny and Susanna Laurin.
What is the problem we are trying to solve?
Lack of prescriptive testing procedures leave room for flexibility and innovation, but also requires public sector bodies and monitoring agencies to have both knowledge and experience of testing requirements that may be “new” to them. Automatic testing tools are far from covering these requirements and accessibility experts are still discussing the details. When member states decide on their own interpretation, the market becomes fragmented, which is bad for all stakeholders.
Developers, designers and content producers – as well as monitoring/surveillance authorities – need a common understanding of the requirements and how to test them. With the European Accessibility Act, the list of requirements will be even longer, so there is no time to lose.

Easy to read
IAAP Nordic webinar 23 April 2024
Recording of the webinar with Heidi Brunæs Eklund, Dr. Leealaura Leskelä and Liisa Keshmiri
Easy to read, easy language, understandable content… Professionals still have not agreed on the terminology for one of the most important elements in communication. In the current EU digital accessibility legislation and standards, the topic is mentioned, but not at all in focus. How do Finland, Norway and Sweden handle the fact that many people have difficulties understanding information? How can digital solutions improve the situation? What can we learn from each other?
In this panel discussion, we get inspiration from experts in the field, with experience from both academic research and practical work with users. As usual, the audience is welcome to ask questions!
Panellists:
- Heidi Brunæs Eklund is a linguist and text scientist, responsible for plain language in the Norwegian company Arkitekst.
- Dr. Leealaura Leskelä is Development Manager in the Finnish Centre for Easy Language in the Finnish Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities.
- Liisa Keshmiri is Chair of the International Society for Alternative and Augmentative Communication (ISAAC) Sweden, and works as a Support Supervisor in the social enterprise company Frösunda Omsorg.
The panel discussion is moderated by Susanna Laurin, Managing Director of IAAP Nordic.
